AS WE AGE...
I don't know if this is a 'rant' per se, or simply the observations of a grumpy old guy, but as I have 'aged' I've noticed that my threshold for bullshit keeps getting higher and higher. Essentially, I'm tired of my time being wasted.
Take television for example, I can remember years ago (when there was only 3 networks; major or otherwise) there was a relative surplus of 'good' shows on. Of course, now you can see them in rerun after rerun on any one of numerous cable/sat channels. Still, the problem remains that out of the 500+ channels available for viewing each evening, I CAN'T FIND A SINGLE SHOW WORTH WATCHING!
My favorite networks have been the Military Channel and the History Channel, but they have degraded to something less than merely amusing or even interesting. I know many in the gun culture enjoy TOP SHOT. I DON'T. I find it contrived and artificial. Additionally, I see enough 'drama' in life, I don't need to add to it.
Of course, I haven't watched a show on the original 3 networks in ages. I know for a fact it's been over a decade.
I did find a new 'movie' channel the other night. It was something to do with MGM, but last night the offering was so lame I went to bed before 9:00PM.
Shit! I've become my father....

Bravo! Couldn't agree more...I am convinced that each human has a different level for "BS Tolerance" and when you've had all you can stand, it's like a tank overflowing. My wife and kids would likely say that's where I'm at these days too.
Have you tried Justified on FX?
Terry
Terry; Not this season, I keep missing the silly thing. I never think of it till after its over. Darn it...

Amen.
There are a couple of network shows I find moderately interesting, as long as I crank up my Suspension of Disbelief enough to enjoy them.
Everything else, forget it. I discontinued cable some time ago, and I'm hard pressed to remember the last time I thought it was worth programming the DVR.
My biggest gripe, however, is the BS artists running most businesses; they seem to have no respect whatsoever for my time or intelligence.
I may need to renew my membership in Hermits International.....
+1 on Justified. Add in Sons of Anarchy (Sopranos on motorcycles) and there are two good shows. Afraid Sons is getting ready to jump the shark but we'll see. Get ready to slap me but I do like one network offering, Big Bang Theory. It's about ready to run its course but the writing is good. I have all the movie channels and can usually find something I haven't seen. Some are good, most are blah, some are crap.
I'm there with ya... sigh
Amen Brother. Amen.
I'm a little over half your age and suffer from the same thing. In the 80s and 90s my life seemed to revolve around that idiot box. I could lose my remote now with the TV stuck on Turner Classic Movies and not miss the ability to change channels.
IF something piques my interest, I just rent the Season DVD later.
I think we've ALL become our father. The WWII generation had a short fuse when it came to BS.
I know the zombie thing is overdone in our gun nut world, (esp on the 'net), but Walking Dead is on my DVR list. As is Justified! Top Shot is also there but with the DVR I can FF through a bunch of crap and get to the important part, the shooting.
I have been a Grumpy Old Fart understudy for the past 25 years and now it is my time. It is a role I have relished and will inhabit joyfully. I tell myself I have a low BS threshold but Mrs Sepulveda says I have simply become impatient.
PS We cancelled cable to save money and get our Justified and Walking Dead via Netflix.
Reno: My son recommends Netflix, but he lives in Los Angeles and we live east of Bumfuck, Eqypt.
Believe me the internet reception is NOT the same. It takes even with a high speed computer approximately 15 minutes for our 'high speed' service to deliver a 3 min. u-tube video.
Sadly, Netflix is not a viable option in this area...
All The Best,
