USELESS TRIVIA FOR THE MECHANICALLY MINDED...

While reading an article in the FARMJOURNAL that came today, I learned that:

1)  Duct tape was first manufactured in 1942 by the Permacel division of Johnson & Johnson.  It was developed from a combination of cloth medical tape with a water resistant outer coating and an all weather adhesive to seal ammunition cases during World War Two.  After the war it was used to seal heating and air conditioning duct work and that was when it gained its silver color.  The big down side to duct tape of course is the gummy adhesive that is left on anything after removal.  The article says that WD-40 will, however, take that stuff off easily.

2)  WD-40 was formulated in 1953 by 3 employees of the Rocket Chemical Company in San Diego, CA.  It got its name because the '40th' attempt at finding a formula with its inherent properties was the most successful one.  I'm not a big fan of WD-40 for firearms applications, but I will say I had an acquaintance once who worked as a security guard and rode a motorcycle.  He soaked his service revolver with the stuff , stuffed it in his service belt holster and then rode for hours through a rainstorm.  That carbon steel revolver never developed the first speck of rust!  Of course, he later learned it 'neutralized' all the ammo it touched when it 'de-activated' the primers.

3)  The "Vise-Grip" adjustable pliers were invented by Wilhelm Peterson, a Danish immigrant to Nebraska, and patented in 1924.  Their popularity grew during World War Two because many servicemen became familiar with them during the war.  I can't think of a farmer anywhere that doesn't have mulitple vise-grip pliers attached in place on equipment in various stages of mechanical disrepair.

4)  "Zip-ties", those plastic fasteners that work for everything imaginable (including using the BIG ones as 'restraints') were invented in 1958 as a nonconducting fastener for electrical wiring in the aerospace industry.  For shooting I've used them during 'emergency applications' of flashlights being attached to long guns for pest removal...

When I was first starting out, I used WD-40 as a gun lube. The day I went to the range and fired off the cartridges in the cylinder, they went *click*......*Boom* with several seconds between the "click" and the "boom".

I've not used WD-40 on my guns since.

These guys did a test of lubricants and primed cases. Their tests had no problems with wd-40.

Speaking as a mechanic, all you need is duct tape and WD-40.

If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape.

If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40.

All the other stuff in my tool box is just chrome souvenirs of expensive visits to tool trucks.
