PLAYING WITH MY NEW 'TOY'...

Okay, I haven't been in the office at all today and as far as the interweb goes, Martians could have invaded Congress, or Atty General Holder could have told the truth, (whichever is stranger) and I wouldn't have known the difference.

My best bud is an insurance jockey and he had to go up to northern Indiana to see a client.  He asked me to ride along.  To which I counter-offered, "Why don't I drive?"  So, I've spent the day getting to know my new toy and being an unpaid chauffeur to my bud.  He did buy me lunch at Portillo's, which if you're into Chicago style hot-dogs is THE PLACE!  No kidding, they serve up a killer hot dog.

Other than that I have little to report, other than the fact on my first tank of gas I averaged 24.4 miles per gallon with the Mustang, which I found astonishing, considering I haven't exactly been practicing for the Mobil Economy Run.

I do have a question for the informed members of the Peanut Gallery.  This Mustang has some sort of "Micro-Soft SYNC" system which is supposed to allow me to program the phone to the vehicle for hands free cell phone service, do any of you have any idea HOW THIS STUFF WORKS?  I got the book out and try to figure it out, but by the middle of the 2nd page I was flat lost.

Any assistance or advice would be most appreciated...

All The Best,
Frank W. James

LOL, Frank, find one of your neighbor's teen age kids. They can probably have it done in 5 minutes, blindfolded :-)

Hi Frank:

I don't have a Ford with a Sync system. I have a GMC pickup that is bluetooth capable. It was fairly easy to sync my iphone to the truck's bluetooth system. I assume the Ford Sync is also bluetooth capable. You must have a bluetooth capable cell phone. Most are anymore. You'll essentially need to get your Ford Sync system in "bluetooth set-up mode" then get your cell phone in "bluetooth set-up mode". If you've done this and the instructions in the car's owner's manual don't work, stop by a Ford dealer. Most likely a salesman or service tech can do the set-up for you. Ford's really gotten a black-eye over their Sync system and will probably be willing to help a customer. They even did a major redesign of the Sync to make more user friendly on some vehicles this model year. Good luck. P.S. Enjoy your columns about farming.

Frank I have had my new Ford Escape since July and I am still trying to figure out the SYNC stuff. Other than getting our phones hooked up to it I am lost. I fly the Airbus for a major airline and I need the book and a 12 year old to do anything new with the SYNC.. Think VCR clock. The SYNC features sound great but time investment beforehand is crazy...

Frank I should have finished my comment with "if you figure it out let me know the secret would ya?"

Thanks

I'm kind of surprised by it, but the people who do our phones are very glad to help hook up that kind of technology. One of our guys bought a new Chrysler and the guy in the Sprint store came out into the lot and showed him ow to not only use the handsfree but also how to play music he had stored on his phone through the car's stereo system. If your cellphone provider has a local store, see if they'll help you.

And congrats on the new ride!!! It's pretty cool.

You're going to have to hook up with Bluetooth, which your phone should have - most do so you can use a hands free headset. To see if your phone is compatible with Ford's Sync, you should go here first: http://www.nsapp.fordtechservice.dealerconnection.com/sync/usEN/sync_us_EN_iop_1_30.pdf

Frank, Probably a stupid question, but does your phone have Bluetooth?

I ask this due to the fact that my Dad couldn't figure out how to configure his Sync, and all along he was trying to do it to a non-Bluetooth phone.

Mr. B: You got it. That's exactly where we were.

As for the 'Sync' system, I got a phone call from a friend who's had a hard time figuring his out and he said the best thing to do is take it to a dealer and HAVE THEM PROGRAM IT!!! Which is what I think I'm going to do...

As for the 'phone' I use some sort of Blackberry (it has a button, remember my frutration with that frickin' Droid last summer?) so I'm going to assume it is Bluetooth compatible.

I know, I know the definition of ass-u-me, but still...

I just hope that if I ever get as old as you, I have guts enough to "let it all hang out" and do something as gutsy as buying a hot car or something similar. I really do admire your sense of adventure...guess I always did!
