MY NAME IS 'FRANK' AND I DO DRUGS...

It got so bad around 5:30PM yesterday that I called the 'doc in a box' office and asked from some more drugs because what I was taking.......WASN'T WORKING!!!!

Long story short, they didn't call the new scripts in to a local pharmacy like I asked them to, but rather the one closest to the 'doc in a box'.  Sooooo, I had to drive back down to Lafayette again.  Only to discover the pharmacy didn't have all the ingredients (it had to be mixed up before immediate use) in stock, or even in the area.

Screw that, I went back to the 'doc in the box'.  (It was literally just across the street.)  Waited 2 more hours and then returned with new scripts to the pharmacy that didn't have what I needed previously.  45 minutes later, as George Carlin would say, "I HAD MY DRUGS!!!"

Since my throat was so swollen I'm on 2 different steroid treatments.  I'm not wild about steroids for a couple of reasons; one of which was my past long time use of Kenilog to treat my asthma.  After 20 years of that stuff we figured out I only had so many bones I could break into tiny pieces and I've tried to stay away from steroids ever since then.

However, the swelling in my throat is now reduced and I no longer feel like the bottom of a feedlot.  Well, maybe let's change that to one that has been 'cleaned' slightly.  I bagged the tax appointment this morning and slept in.  After sleeping till 10:00AM, I felt human enough to actually bathe (everyone in my presence appreciated that one) and leave the house this afternoon to do errands.

Although I'm feeling somewhat improved I'm still weak as a kitten, but not nearly as cute.  It IS a sinus infection, but it is so advanced the infection part (pus and such) have drained down into what remains of my tonsils.  (How's that for TMI?)  That's why my throat is so swollen.

Right now all I'm looking forward to is feeling like a human being once again, and NOT the bottom of a feedlot...

All The Best,
Frank W. James

PS:   A COUPLE OF THINGS I NEED TO MAKE NOTE OF:  (1) a bunch of comments got lost in Google and I wasn't notified of their presence.  I just found them and posted all of them but 2.  The 2 were pure out-and-out SPAM!  (2) I'm going to try and post a gun related post tomorrow if for no other reason than sheer practice as it's been awhile since I've done anything here that was gun-related.  Probably have something about 'White Grips' in the title post...

Frank,

Saline solution. Up the nose. Truly.

Yoga for the hard core and advanced includes a sinus flush, using a neti pot. Walmart and other stores have them on the shelf, just ask at the pharmacy.

A more western version of the same thing is the little nasal-spray sized bottle of salt water (they call it Saline Nasal Spray). No medication so it cannot interfere with any other treatment or meds. My family doctor in Arizona claimed that twice in each side and blow, once an hour, will clear up to a sinus infection without antibiotics. Be sure to inhale (as much as possible) with each squeeze of the bottle. It helps with allergies, too, according to the doctor. I asked, because my chiropractor had suggested it for bloody nose (dry air down there, go figure). I find the saline nasal mist is a comfort after working in dusty stuff, from the plasma cutter to hay and straw.

A friend in the Navy claimed the Navy doc told him to snuff a handful of water up his nose in the shower.

The formula a friend gave me in Minneapolis was 1 cup warm water with 1/8 tsp non-iodized salt and 1/8th tsp baking soda to buffer it. The salt sterilizes, mildly, the flow of water flushes off the accumulated guck and stimulates clean mucous to replenish the sinus tissues.

A 'dry' cough is usually sinus drainage, and the saline nasal mist, the neti wash, or the snuffed water will help.

. . and the single most common cause for sinus pain and infection is reflux from the stomach, often at night. If you don't have an advanced case of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, it might not even burn (as in 'heart burn', that acid injury to your throat and esophagus that we mis-label so badly). Beware especially of alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, and onions anytime before laying down; these relax the sphincter at the top of the stomach/bottom of the diaphragm under the lungs that is supposed to keep food and acids in the stomach.

I find decaf hot green tea with honey is great for accelerating stomach action, getting digestion going quickly. Cold drinks and cold foods, on the other hand, tend to stop digestion (keeping the stomach full longer, making reflux more likely) until the stomach and contents are warmed back up to body warmth.

Sinus infections from reflux are acid burns, that don't respond well to anti-viral treatments. Flushing contaminants and sloughed tissues and seepage away, regardless of whether the infection is bacterial, viral, or injury, makes sense to me.

Ask your doctor. Or dentist -- advanced GERD tends to wash the enamel off the back teeth in a characteristic fashion, leading to more cavities.

And you might try the old standby, chicken soup. Just avoid anything non-fat. I read that the way chicken soup works to speed recovery from a cold, is that the chicken *fat* irritates the sinuses, making them secrete more mucous, thus flushing off the virus/bacteria that keep re-igniting the cold.

But I like the bottle of saline nasal mist. A couple of bucks, it seems to last a long time, the national "Ocean" brand is $3.50 or so at Walmart here. Like all other nasal sprays, though, you don't let anyone else use yours, once it has been used. This gets back to the "You can pick your nose, and you can pick your friends, but you cannot pick . . "

Blessed be.

Hello Frank

Like you, I was on prescription steroids for many years. Rather late I found out that people on steroid medication need to avoid eating salt and salty food as far as they can. It makes a big difference to your health and you feel so much better. I created a website to help people who have taken prescribed steroids or some other prescription drugs. I hope you will have a look at it. It could help you a lot. It has helped many people. It is www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk

All the best to you.
